It?s nearly the weekend; can you feel it? Characterized by an overwhelming urge to get out and play, we could nearly hear it a mile away. It?s time to put away the earbuds and invest in the live venue format with some bands that love the life out of performing. A lot of the acts we?ve chosen can speak for themselves, but if you need quality and variety, you?ve got it ? fusion rock, experimental rock, electronic instrumental, and folk are just a few of the styles we?ve got ? check out our picks for the weekend below.
- Eastern Conference Champions | Friday, September 16 | 8:30 pm | 21+ | The Satellite, Los Angeles, CA -Map | The currently-based-in-Los-Angeles band has topped our weekend bill before, and the reason is one that ever continues ? they?re awesome. Outside of that, they?re catchy and clever, with pop tunes and rhythms that do a battle against rock sensibilities. Even after their song ?A Million Miles An Hour? being featured on The Twilight Saga: Eclipsesoundtrack last year, they haven?t lost their edge. If anything they?ve refined the sound that made them so solid in the first place.Fun fun, we love love. With Duniven, Warships ? Buy Tickets
- Nerve | Friday, September 16 | 10:00 pm | 21+ | $10 | Mercury Lounge, New York, NY ? Map |Electronic outfit Nerve, one of the many collaborative efforts taken on but specifically founded by drummer Jojo Mayer in 1997, is pretty sweet, sick, and everything in between, and we?re sure they?re well aware of their talent. You can pretty much hear the swagger coming through the sounds. They?re currentlypromoting their new album, The Distance Between Zero and One. Buy Tickets
- Freelance Whales | Saturday, September 17 | 7:00 pm | 21+ | Free with RSVP | Secret Location, Chicago IL | Ah, secrets. They make everyone feel special, which is why (among other reasons, we?re sure) Freelance Whales is holding a super secret show. There?s always such excitable fuss and urgency behind such shows, and we can understand the energy behind it. Our favorite for some time now, the New York-based electronic rock group is an eclectic sort that only sticks to convention just long enough to show us the difference between good and awesome. Click here for more information.
- Ghostland Observatory | Saturday, September 17 | 8:00 pm | All Ages | $26.50 in advance, $30 day of show | Terminal 5, New York, NY ? Map |Experimental rock styles have been done for a long time running, but its various interpretations in and on the modern music scene are hard to not stop us in our tracks. Austin, Texas, based band Ghostland Observatory is one such ?stopper?, tossing elements of electro and funk into a well-structured hard rock and roll sound that has so far proven very fun to get caught up in. - Laura Marling | Sunday, September 18 | 8:00 pm | All Ages | $25 | Hollywood Forever Cemetary, Los Angeles, CA ? Map | With a voice and a style seemingly beyond her years, Laura Marling rides the haunting, dark and dreary folk train with a conviction that we assume can?t be shaken. A classic before her peak (we hope), she has a strong and bright musical life within that thankfully doesn?t involve glittery tube tops and predictable bubble gum pop hooks (and we?re even a little ashamed to be mentioning the stuff in comparison to how much her music is not). With Alessi?s Ark ? for more information, call (323) 469-1181.
Those are our picks and we?re sticking to ?em. Who?s on your To See List this weekend?
