Elton John?s husband David Furnish had a strong, negative reaction to Madonna?s Sunday night win at the 2012 Golden Globe Awards. Like John, Madonna was nominated for Best Original Song, but when Adam Levine announced Madonna as the winner, neither John nor Furnished took it well. It seems like the start of yet another pop diva feud.
According to TMZ, Furnish poked fun at Madonna?s acceptance speech, calling it ?embarrassing? and narcissistic, on Facebook:
?Madonna. Best song???? F**k off!!!! Madonna winning Best Original Song truly shows how these awards have nothing to do with merit. Her acceptance speech was embarrassing in it?s narcissism. And her criticism of Gaga shows how desperate she really is.?
Madonna was nominated for her song ?Masterpiece? in her film W.E., while John was nominated for Gnomeo and Juliet?s ?Hello, Hello.?
During her acceptance speech Madonna talked about Guy Oseary pressuring her to make a song for the movie. In her reformed-British voice, she said:
?[Oseary] harangued me for the entire time I was filming and editing my movie to write a song. And I said, ?Please, Guy, I?m trying to focus on being a director I want people to able to pay attention to the film. And I don?t have time.? So then I finished the film and I started making my record and somehow magically and miraculously the song emerged, ?Masterpiece,? so thank you, Guy Oseary, for being so irritating.?
Before the Awards show started, both John and Madonna walked the red carpet and talked to Carson Daly (separately). Daly asked John what he thought about Madonna?s nomination and he responded, ?She has no f***ing chance [in winning].? During his short interview with Madonna, Daly told her what John had said to which she responded, ?Was he wearing a dress? May the best man win.?
According to Us Weekly, a very diplomatic Madonna told the press backstage that she wishes she and John could sort things out:
?I hope he speaks to me for the next couple of years. He?s been known to get mad at me so I don?t know. He?s brilliant and I adore him so he?ll win another award. I don?t feel bad.?
Throughout the Globes broadcast the camera showed John looking rather sour-faced. Either he wasn?t having fun or Madonna?s win really spoiled his evening.
Recently Madonna made comments about Lady Gaga?s ?Born This Way,? calling it a redo of her song ?Express Yourself.?
